Introduction

The Highland Sanctuary of the Chakhesang

Phek District, stretching along the southeastern mountains of Nagaland bordering Manipur and Myanmar, is the traditional homeland of the Chakhesang Naga tribe (which includes the Chokri, Khezha, and Sangtam groups) and the Pochury tribe. Famous for its rugged landscapes, pine forests, and high-altitude farms, Phek is the coldest and highest inhabited district in the state. Here, layers of deep green hills are carved with neat terraces of rice, and misty winds carry the scent of glory pines down the empty mountain highways.

The district is defined by its extreme elevations. **Pfutsero**, situated at 2,133 meters, is the highest town in Nagaland. Known for its chilly winters where temperatures drop below freezing, Pfutsero is a major center of organic horticulture, filled with flower greenhouses, apple orchards, and terraced vegetable fields. The town's highest lookout point, Glory Peak, offers views of the Barail mountain range, with the peak of Mt. Saramati rising in the distant blue sky.

Deep within the eastern corner of Phek lies **Shilloi Lake**, a natural, heart-shaped lake nestled between pine-clad slopes. Treated as sacred by the local villagers of Lanye, the lake has been protected from human exploitation for centuries; local custom forbids swimming, fishing, or boating in its waters. Phek also holds **Khezhakeno**, a mythical village considered the birthplace of several Naga tribes, where ancient stones mark the legendary origins of local clans. For slow travelers, Phek offers a peaceful sanctuary of high ridges, ancient legends, and mountain forests.

"The heart of Phek lies in the quiet ripples of Shilloi, where the water guards the forest, and the pines whisper the old stories of our birth."

Legends & Tribal Heritage

The Magical Stone of Khezhakeno

Khezhakeno village holds a legendary status in Naga folklore due to the *Tsopre*, a flat stone monument located in the center of the old village. According to myths, an old couple discovered that the stone possessed magical powers. Whenever they spread a basket of paddy rice on the stone to dry, the quantity would double by sunset, ensuring their household never went hungry.

As the story spread, the village clans began to fight over the ownership of this magical resource. Fearing that the dispute would lead to war and destroy the village, the village elders decided to destroy the magic of the stone. They piled dry wood over the stone and set it on fire. The heat caused the stone to crack, and a red spirit was seen escaping into the sky, ending the stone's magical multiplication but restoring peace to the tribe.
