Introduction

The Green Sanctuary of the Zeliang Hills

Peren District, sitting in the southwestern corner of Nagaland bordering Assam and Manipur, is the traditional homeland of the Zeliang Naga and Liangmai Naga tribes. Known as the green lung of the state, Peren is covered in dense subtropical rainforests, river valleys, and high mountain ridges. It remains one of the most ecologically diverse and pristine areas in Northeast India, offering a quiet, peaceful sanctuary far from the busier mountain highways.

The ecological crown of the district is **Ntangki National Park**, which covers over 200 square kilometers of virgin rainforest. It is the only national park in Nagaland, protecting wild elephants, leopards, hoolock gibbons (India's only ape species), hornbills, and the rare wild water buffalo (mithun). The park's thick canopy and river loops are community-protected, providing a vital habitat for native flora and fauna.

For hikers, the towering **Mount Paona** (the second highest peak in Nagaland at 2,500 meters) offers trails through thick groves of dwarf bamboo. At the foot of the mountain sits **Benreu Village**, a high-altitude Zeliang eco-tourism settlement that has preserved its traditional wooden architectures, stone avenues, and local homestays. Peren offers slow travelers a unique opportunity to walk through pristine rainforests and experience authentic Zeliang hospitality.

"In the quiet valleys of Ntangki, the elephant's footprint is our river, and the gibbon's cry is our morning bell."

Legends & Tribal Heritage

The Elephant's Path of Ntangki

Zeliang Naga mythology holds a close connection to the wildlife of the rainforests. Traditional folklore tells that in early times, the animals of the Ntangki forests met in a grand council to resolve a dispute between land animals and river creatures over water rights. The council agreed that the forest's largest animal, the elephant, would walk a path through the valley.

Where the elephant trod, the land sank, carving out the riverbed of the Ntangki river and ensuring water flowed to all corners of the forest. The Zeliangs believe that the elephant's migration paths are sacred routes that protect the forest's life-force, and local communities still watch over these migration pathways to prevent poaching.
