Introduction

Where the Plains Meet the First Ridges

ising immediately from the edge of the Dimapur plains, Chumoukedima District serves as the beautiful geographical threshold of Nagaland. Long functioning as the district headquarters of Dimapur before its elevation to a separate district, Chumoukedima combines the accessibility of plain transport links with the lush, forested steepness of the Angami hills. The district has historically been a meeting ground for different cultures, witnessing the ancient overlap of the Dimasa Kachari kingdom and the Angami Naga territories.

The landscape is defined by green cliffs, rushing streams, and dense bamboo forests. As you climb the old foothill routes, the temperature drops, replaced by the cool breeze of the mountains. Chumoukedima is a paradise for outdoor adventurers and hikers, offering trails that lead to hidden waterfalls, high viewpoints looking back across the Assam plains, and preservation villages where tribal crafts and community stories are kept alive.

The Three Sisters of the Cliffs

Local Angami folklore tells the story of three exceptionally beautiful sisters who lived in a village on the high ridge above the current waterfall site. A powerful, tyrannical warlord from a neighboring valley sought to capture all three sisters to cement his control over the hills.

Refusing to be captured and lose their freedom, the three sisters fled into the dense forest. When cornered at the edge of a massive, sheer cliff, they held hands and leaped into the abyss. The forest spirits, moved by their bravery, transformed their spirits into three separate, cascading streams of water””the Triple Falls””ensuring they would flow freely forever.
