Periyar National Park is world-famous for its scenic artificial lake and water-edge wildlife sightings in Thekkady.

Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve, centered around the picturesque town of Thekkady in Kerala's Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, covers 350 square kilometers of core wilderness within a 925 km² protected reserve. Created around the 26 km² Periyar Lake formed by the 1895 Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar and Mullayar rivers, Periyar is one of India's most celebrated and pioneering wildlife sanctuaries. Renowned globally for its boat safaris where visitors view wild elephants, gaur, and deer grazing at the water's edge, Periyar is also an international model for community-based ecotourism and tiger conservation.

Location & Geography

Perched high in the Cardamom and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats, Periyar's elevation ranges from 900 meters around the lake to 2,016 meters at Kottamala peak. The central feature is the labyrinthine Periyar Lake, whose submerged tree stumps provide natural perches for waterbirds. The topography features steep ridges, moist valleys, cascading streams, and vast savannah plateaus draining into the Periyar and Pamba river systems.

Geographic & Topographic Parameters

Coordinates: 9°28' N, 77°10' E
Elevation Range: 900 m to 2,016 m (Kottamala)
Terrain & Landscape: Undulating Cardamom and Pandalam hills, 26 km² artificial lake backwaters, evergreen rainforests, and savannahs

Area & Establishment

Originally established in 1934 as the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary by the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, the area was reconstituted as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950. In 1978, it was inducted as an original Project Tiger Reserve, and in 1982, the central core of 350 square kilometers was officially designated as Periyar National Park under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Significance

Periyar is internationally acclaimed as one of the best-managed protected areas in the developing world. Through its pioneering Eco-Development Committees (EDCs), former poachers and cinnamon bark strippers were rehabilitated into dedicated forest protectors, guides, and trackers. It forms the anchor of the Periyar-Agasthyamalai elephant corridor and shelters viable breeding populations of tigers and lion-tailed macaques.

Wildlife

The park hosts 62 species of mammals. Carnivores include the Royal Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, dhole (Asiatic wild dog), sloth bear, and jungle cat. Herbivores thrive in immense numbers, with over 1,000 Asian elephants, massive herds of gaur (Indian bison), sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, and wild boar. Primates include the endangered lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, and bonnet macaque.

Flagship Species: Asian Elephant & Bengal Tiger

The Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) and Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris) are the celebrated monarchs of Periyar. During morning and afternoon boat safaris on Periyar Lake, elephant family herds—frequently with tiny, playful calves—emerge from the rainforest to drink, bathe, and swim playfully between lake inlets. Meanwhile, the dense interior evergreen canopies protect a thriving breeding population of over 40 Royal Bengal tigers.

Ornithologists revere Periyar, with over 320 recorded bird species. Highlights include the great pied hornbill, Malabar grey hornbill, Ceylon frogmouth, blue-winged parakeet, white-bellied treepie, and black baza. Lake waters are patrolled by ospreys, grey-headed fish eagles, and darters. The lake also shelters the endangered Periyar trout (Lepidopygopsis typus), found nowhere else on Earth.

Flora & Vegetation

Vegetation transitions through West Coast Tropical Evergreen (33%), Semi-Evergreen (41%), Moist Deciduous, and Montane Grassland ecosystems. Towering canopies feature Artocarpus hirsutus, Hopea parviflora, Dipterocarpus, and teak. The understory is dense with wild cardamom, black pepper vines, and over 145 species of epiphytic orchids.

Safari & Visiting

Periyar offers India's most diverse array of eco-tourism programs. The most famous is the 90-minute Periyar Lake boat cruise operated by the Forest Department and KTDC. For adventure seekers, Full-Day Bamboo Rafting combines hiking through evergreen forests with scenic rafting on the lake. Other acclaimed community-led activities include the Border Hiking trail, Jungle Scout night patrols, and the 2-night/3-day 'Periyar Tiger Trail' wilderness expedition.
