Bannerghatta National Park anchors a vital Asian elephant corridor immediately south of metropolitan Bengaluru.

Bannerghatta National Park, situated just 22 kilometers south of Bengaluru, covers 104.27 square kilometers of rugged granite hills and dry deciduous forest. Established as a National Park in 1974, it is divided into two distinct components: the wild, protected national park wilderness that functions as a critical migration corridor for wild Asian elephants, and the popular 731-hectare Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP). Celebrated for its thrilling caged bus safaris featuring tigers, lions, and bears, as well as India's first dedicated enclosed butterfly conservatory, Bannerghatta is an indispensable urban eco-destination.

Location & Geography

The park lies across the Bengaluru Urban and Ramanagara districts, forming the northern terminus of the Eastern Ghats elephant corridor. The landscape is characterized by ancient granite inselbergs, dry scrub ravines, small seasonal reservoirs (such as Suvarnamukhi), and rocky boulder fields. Elevations climb from 700 meters to 1,035 meters at Mirza Hill, commanding views of the sprawling IT capital.

Geographic & Topographic Parameters

Coordinates: 12°48' N, 77°34' E
Elevation Range: 700 m to 1,035 m above sea level
Terrain & Landscape: Undulating granite hills, dry deciduous scrub valleys, rocky outcrops, and bamboo groves

Area & Establishment

Conceived in 1971 as a recreational and nature sanctuary for the growing city of Bangalore, the area was formally declared a National Park in 1974. In 2002, to optimize conservation management, the government bifurcated the park: the wild 104 km² elephant corridor remained under the territorial Forest Department, while the safari complex, zoo, and rescue centers were incorporated as the autonomous Bannerghatta Biological Park under the Zoo Authority of Karnataka.

Significance

Bannerghatta holds critical regional conservation significance as a vital stepping stone in the Cauvery-Nilgiri Elephant Corridor. Wild elephant herds migrating between the Biligirirangana Hills (BRT), Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tamil Nadu's Hosur forests utilize Bannerghatta's interior valleys. It also houses one of the world's largest rescue centers for rehabilitated dancing bears and captive big cats.

Wildlife

The wild national park shelters free-ranging Asian elephants, Indian leopards, wild boars, sambar, chital, barking deer, bonnet macaques, pangolins, and monitor lizards. The enclosed safari zone exhibits Royal Bengal tigers (including rare white tigers), Asiatic lions, and sloth bears roaming in vast natural forest enclosures.

Flagship Species: Asian Elephant & Bengal Tiger

The Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) and the Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris) are the dual champions of Bannerghatta. Wild elephant herds roam the remote southern valleys of the park, often bathing in forest tanks. Meanwhile, the Grand Safari allows visitors to observe powerful tigers and lions resting amidst bamboo groves and rocky ledges from the safety of specialized department safari vehicles.

Avian life in Bannerghatta includes over 160 species, such as the yellow-throated bulbul (found on granite boulders), crested serpent eagle, Asian paradise flycatcher, white-bellied drongo, and spotted owlet. India's first Butterfly Park features a 10,000 sq ft polycarbonate greenhouse sheltering over 30 species of vibrant tropical butterflies.

Flora & Vegetation

The park exhibits Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous and Dry Thorn Scrub vegetation. Common tree species include Wrightia tinctoria, Acacia catechu, Ziziphus mauritiana, Terminalia tomentosa, and neem. Patches of bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) line the nullahs, while higher rocky ridges support hardy xerophytic Euphorbias.

Safari & Visiting

Tourism activities are concentrated at the Bannerghatta Biological Park. The signature 'Grand Safari' operates in secure, air-conditioned and non-AC buses, driving visitors through the Herbivore Safari, Bear Safari, Tiger Safari, and Lion Safari. After the bus tour, visitors can explore the world-class zoological gardens, the Butterfly Park dome, and take pedal boat rides on the scenic Kavalkere Lake.
