Chapter I

The Soul of the Royal Capital

To walk the heritage streets of Mysuru is to enter a city built on royal patronage and cultural detail. The air is warm, dry, and sweet-scented, carrying the smell of jasmine flowers (*Mysore Mallige*), sandalwood incense, and cardamom-spiced coffee. The city landscape is defined by wide tree-lined avenues, yellow heritage buildings, and the domes of the Amba Vilas Palace. This is Mysore, the cultural capital of Karnataka, a city that was the center of the Kingdom of Mysore for over six centuries under the Wodeyar dynasty.

The soul of Mysuru lies in its royal heritage and craft communities. Walk through the lanes around the Devaraja Market and you will find artisans carving blocks of sandalwood, oil distillers, and silk weavers. Under the patronage of the Wodeyar Maharajas, the city became a major center for music, yoga, and literature. The royal family established factories for silk weaving and sandalwood oil distillation in the early 20th century, which continue to operate today, preserving traditional craft standards.

This heritage is visible during the annual Mysore Dasara festival. The ten-day celebration turns the city into a stage, culminating in the Jumboo Savari procession on Vijayadashami. A decorated elephant carries a 750 kg golden carriage containing the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari from the palace to the Bannimantap grounds, accompanied by royal guards, musicians, and folk dance troupes.

Yaduraya Wodeyar established a local dynasty in Mysore under the Vijayanagara Empire. He secured the region and constructed a mud fort to defend the settlement.

1761 - 1799 AD

The Rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan

Military commanders Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan took control of the kingdom, governing from Srirangapatna. Following Tipu Sultan's defeat in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British restored the Wodeyars to the throne.

1912 AD

Completion of Amba Vilas Palace

Following a fire that destroyed the old wooden palace, British architect Henry Irwin designed the new stone Amba Vilas Palace. It was completed during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, displaying Indo-Saracenic design.

1947 AD

Accession to the Indian Union

Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar signed the instrument of accession, merging the Kingdom of Mysore into the Republic of India. He served as the first Rajpramukh of Mysore State.

Chapter III

Sandalwood Distillation & Mysore Silk Weaving

Mysuru's craft traditions are closely tied to royal enterprises. Use the tabs below to explore the traditional distillation of sandalwood oil and the weaving of Mysore silk sarees.

Sandalwood Oil Steam Distillation

The extraction of sandalwood oil is a traditional industry in Mysore, initiated by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in 1916 to utilize local sandalwood trees.

The heartwood of the Santalum album tree is ground into powder and subjected to steam distillation. The steam carries the oil vapor, which is condensed and separated to yield pure sandalwood oil.

Mysore Sandalwood Oil is famous for its sweet, woody fragrance, and is used globally in perfumes, cosmetics, and the production of Mysore Sandal Soap.

Weaving with Real Gold Zari

Mysore Silk sarees are famous for their use of pure silk thread and real gold and silver threads (*zari*). The craft was established under royal patronage in 1912.

The silk is sourced from local silkworms and woven at the Government Silk Weaving Factory. The looms weave the silk with zari border patterns, producing lightweight sarees.

Every authentic Mysore Silk saree carries a unique identification code and hologram woven into its border to guarantee its purity under a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
