Koderma, known as the 'Gateway to Jharkhand', is a district located in the northernmost part of the state, bordering Bihar. For decades, it held a global monopoly on the production of high-quality 'ruby mica'.
The district headquarters are at Koderma town, but the world-famous town of Jhumri Telaiya is the primary commercial center, historically known for its wealthy mica tycoons and radio song requests. Tilaiya Dam, built on the Barakar River, was the first major dam in independent India.
