The district is globally recognized as the birth land of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the famous Adivasi freedom fighter who led the Ulgulan rebellion against British land grabs. The village of Ulihatu is his birth site, and Dombari Buru hill is the tragic battleground of his final stand.
