Matsya
The Great Fish (मत्स्य)In the epoch of the previous Manu (the cosmic progenitor of humanity), a catastrophic deluge was prophesied — a cosmic flood that would annihilate all life and submerge the sacred Vedas. As Manu was offering water ablutions, Vishnu appeared in his hands as a tiny fish. The fish requested protection and kept growing magically — from a water pot to a well, to a river, and finally the ocean, revealing His cosmic form.
Vishnu instructed Manu to construct a massive ark and gather the seeds of all life forms, the seven sages (Saptarishis), and the sacred texts. When the great flood arrived, Matsya — now a colossal horned fish — appeared. Using the cosmic serpent Vasuki as a rope, Manu tied his boat to Matsya's horn, and the Lord towed humanity's remnants through the apocalyptic waters.
This narrative bears striking resemblances to the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and the Biblical tale of Noah's Ark, hinting at a universal human memory of a great deluge.
