Overview
Ujjain and Omkareshwar are two of the 12 Jyotirlingas (self-manifested Shiva shrines) and the most sacred Shaiva pilgrimage sites in central India. Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is unique as it faces south (Dakshinamukhi) and is the only Jyotirlinga facing south — representing Shiva's role as the God of Death and Time. The Bhasma Aarti (ash aarti, 4 AM) is one of Hinduism's most dramatic rituals: the Shivalinga is smeared with cremation ash from the Smashan (cremation ground), symbolising Shiva's lordship over death. The Kshipra River ghats of Ujjain host the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every 12 years. Omkareshwar (95 km from Ujjain) is an island temple on the Narmada River shaped naturally like the Sanskrit syllable 'Om' — the Jyotirlinga here is Omkareshwar-Mamleshwar, the twin-shrine form of Shiva. Together they form a 2-day pilgrimage.
How to Reach
Ujjain Railway Station (on the Mumbai-Delhi Western Railway and Indore–Ujjain metre gauge line); Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport Indore (55 km); Omkareshwar reached by Mortakka on the Indore-Khandwa road (75 km from Indore)
Key Highlights
Bhasma Aarti (4 AM, Mahakaleshwar)
The Shivalinga is adorned with cremation ash — priests perform the aarti in dim candlelight as the lingam is ritually bathed, smeared with ash, and decorated with flowers. Advance online booking essential.
Kshipra River Snan at Ram Ghat
Ritual bathing in the sacred Kshipra River at Ujjain's main ghat — the Saptasagar (seven sacred ponds) nearby are also used for ritual bathing.
Omkareshwar Island Temple
Cross the Narmada by boat or the suspension footbridge to the OM-shaped island — circumambulate the island (8 km parikrama) before taking darshan of both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar shrines.
Kal Bhairav Temple (Ujjain)
The ferocious form of Shiva at Kal Bhairav temple receives offerings of liquor (mahua and wine) — a unique and ancient tradition unique to this temple.
Chintaman Ganesh Temple (Ujjain)
One of the svayambhu (self-manifested) Ganesha temples — a mandatory stop in the Ujjain pilgrimage circuit.
Harsiddhi Temple (Ujjain)
A Shakti Pithas (one of 18 or 51 sacred female power sites) — the goddess Harsiddhi is believed to have a particularly swift response to devotees' prayers at Ujjain.
