Overview
Nandgaon and Gokul are two of the central villages of the sacred Braj Mandal — the 84-kos (350-km) pilgrimage circle of Lord Krishna's life landscape in Mathura district. Nandgaon is the village of Nanda Maharaj (Krishna's foster father) on a hilltop 50 km from Mathura — the Nandishwar Parvat (hill) contains the Nanda Bhavan temple where Krishna lived as a child. Gokul (15 km from Mathura on the Yamuna bank) is Krishna's first home — where foster mother Yashoda raised him and where Putana came to kill him. The Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon and Barsana (week before main Holi) is one of India's most exuberant and photographed festivals — women from Barsana beat men from Nandgaon with wooden sticks (lathis) in a playful re-enactment of Krishna's teasing of Radha. The Gokul Barso Utsav in August celebrates Krishna's arrival at Gokul after his birth.
How to Reach

Key Highlights
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon
Men from Nandgaon visit Barsana; women from Barsana beat them with lathis (wooden sticks) amid clouds of coloured powder — the most boisterous Holi celebration in India, recreating Krishna's teasing of Radha.

The hilltop temple where Krishna lived with his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda — the inner sanctum contains an ancient deity of Nandbihariji (Krishna in his Nandgaon form).

The riverbank ghats of Gokul where Vasudeva carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna on that stormy midnight of Janmashtami — the Thakurani Ghat marks the crossing spot.

The main temple of Balrama (Krishna's elder brother) in Braj — a mandatory stop completing the Braj Mandal pilgrimage alongside Krishna's sites.
84-Kos Braj Parikrama
The complete circumambulation of all Krishna-associated sites — a 350-km circuit traditionally walked barefoot over 30 days by the most devout Vaishnavas.
