Porbandar (ancient 'Sudamapuri') is the hallowed birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi), born here on October 2, 1869. The Kirti Mandir memorial temple, built in 1950 adjacent to the three-storey ancestral Gandhi house, commemorates the life of the Father of the Nation. Porbandar is also sacred as the birthplace of Sudama, Lord Krishna's devoted childhood companion, housing the unique 12th-century Sudama Temple. The city's white limestone architecture earned it the moniker 'The White City'.
