The Tree Canopy of Sabarmati Grid & the Subterranean Stepwells
Situated along the western bank of the Sabarmati River, 23 km north of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar is the planned capital of Gujarat. Designed in 1965 by chief architects H.K. Mewada and Prakash M. Apte, the city was organized into 30 self-contained numbered sectors surrounded by extensive greenbelts. Recognized as one of the greenest capital cities in Asia with over 54% tree canopy coverage, Gandhinagar serves as the administrative, technological, and spiritual anchor of Gujarat.
The visual identity of Gandhinagar is Sabarmati forest green and pink sandstone gold. Just outside the city grid lies **Adalaj Stepwell** (*Rudabai Ni Vav*)—a 5-storey Solanki-Islamic architectural masterpiece built in 1498 AD by Queen Rudabai, where intricate friezes of elephants, dancers, and erotics adorn cool subterranean water landings. Dominating Sector 20 is **Akshardham Temple**—a 23-acre pink sandstone complex housing 97 carved pillars, **Indroda Park** (the Jurassic Park of India), and the 41-meter salt-crystal-shaped **Dandi Kutir** museum.
"Five stories beneath the Gujarat sun, Queen Rudabai's 1498 stepwell holds cool water reflections surrounded by Solanki stone carvings."
