1. The Sacred Himalayan Mother-Son Reunion of Badrinath
Every autumn on the sacred lunar date of **Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi** (falling in late August or September), the majestic glacial valley of Badrinath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand witnesses one of the most tender, emotionally profound pilgrimages in the Himalayas: Mata Murti Mela.
Situated 3 kilometers upstream from Badrinath Dham on the right bank of the roaring **Alaknanda River** near the border village of Mana, the ancient stone shrine of **Mata Murti (elevation 10,200 ft / 3,110 m)** is dedicated to the divine mother of Lord Vishnu's twin avatar incarnations, **Sage Nara and Sage Narayana**. Legend recounts that Mata Murti performed intense penance in this harsh high-altitude landscape to request Lord Vishnu to take birth as her sons for the welfare of mankind and the slaying of demon Sahasrakavacha. Pleased with her supreme devotion, Lord Vishnu granted her boon and promised that He would journey from His sanctum to visit her every year on this exact day.
During the fair, the Rawal (head Namboodiri priest) and Dimri priests of Badrinath place the sacred processional idol of **Lord Badri Vishal (Uddhav Ji)** inside an ornate **Silver Doli (palanquin)** draped in glowing yellow pitambari silks. Accompanied by thousands of barefoot pilgrims, blowing conch shells, beating Garhwali Dhol-Damau drums, and chanting *"Jai Badri Vishal!"*, the procession marches along the rocky Alaknanda riverbed to the mother's temple for a day-long celestial reunion.
