Dwarka Sub-City — Asia's Largest Planned Township

South West Delhi is defined by one of the most ambitious urban planning projects in modern Asian history: the Dwarka Sub-City (formerly known as the Papankalan project). Conceived in the late 1980s and developed by the Delhi Development Authority across 5,648 hectares of land, Dwarka was engineered as a self-sufficient satellite township to relieve severe housing pressures on central and southern Delhi, accommodating a planned population of over one million residents.

The sub-city is laid out on a systematic sector-grid master plan encompassing 29 sectors. Unlike the organic, dense expansion of historic Old Delhi or the early post-independence refugee settlements, Dwarka features wide multi-lane arterial avenues, dedicated service lanes, underground utility corridors, and designated green buffers between residential and commercial blocks. Each sector functions as an independent neighborhood unit, anchored by a Local Shopping Centre (LSC), primary schools, neighborhood parks, and cooperative group housing societies (CGHS).

Dwarka has pioneered urban environmental initiatives in the capital, implementing mandatory rooftop rainwater harvesting across its hundreds of multi-storey residential complexes. In Sector 20, the DDA is developing the Bharat Vandana Park across 200 acres—a major eco-tourism and cultural project featuring miniature replicas of India's architectural monuments, botanical conservatories, extensive water bodies, and pedestrian skywalks.

The sub-city's global commercial standing received a massive boost with the construction of Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre - IICC) in Sector 25. Spanning over 8.9 lakh square meters of total project area, Yashobhoomi ranks among the largest convention and exhibition facilities in the world, featuring an auditorium seating 6,000 delegates, a grand ballroom, 15 convention rooms, and massive exhibition halls served by an exclusive underground extension of the Delhi Airport Express Metro line.

IGI Airport, Aerocity Hub & Mughal Hunting Lodges

South West Delhi serves as India's primary gateway to the world through Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), located in the Palam corridor. Originating in the 1930s as Royal Air Force Station Palam during World War II, the airfield was transferred to civil aviation authorities in 1962 and officially renamed after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1986. Following extensive privatization and modernization under Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the opening of Terminal 3 (T3) in 2010 propelled IGI Airport into one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, handling over 70 million passengers annually across four operational runways.

Directly adjacent to the airport terminals lies Delhi Aerocity, an integrated 43-acre commercial, hospitality, and dining district. Developed as India's first airport-adjacent aerotropolis zone, Aerocity houses over 15 international luxury and business hotels—including JW Marriott, Andaz by Hyatt, Pullman, and Roseate House—providing over 5,000 hotel rooms. The district also features the Worldmark commercial towers, hosting corporate headquarters, upscale restaurants, and luxury retail promenades.

Amidst this modern aviation infrastructure, South West Delhi preserves hidden fragments of imperial history. In Hastsal village near Uttam Nagar stands the Hastsal Minar, also known locally as the Mini Qutb Minar or Kaithal Minar. Built in 1650 CE by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, this 17-meter-tall three-storey tower was constructed from red sandstone and lakhori bricks as a royal hunting retreat (shikargah) and lookout tower, where the emperor rested after hunting wild antelope and nilgai in the surrounding wilderness.

Najafgarh Rural Basin & Delhi Cantonment Heritage

South West Delhi encompasses a remarkable geographic duality: while its eastern edge hosts the gleaming international terminals of IGI Airport and the corporate towers of Aerocity, its western expanse reaches into the historic agricultural heartland of Najafgarh. Najafgarh takes its name from Mirza Najaf Khan (1723–1782), the Commander-in-Chief of the Mughal army under Emperor Shah Alam II, who constructed a strong military outpost and mud fort here to defend the western approaches of Delhi from regional marauders.

Today, Najafgarh represents Delhi's largest rural tehsil, encompassing dozens of traditional agrarian villages known for cultivating wheat, mustard, and seasonal vegetables. The region is equally celebrated across India as a cradle of traditional Indian wrestling (kushti), with historic village akhadas (clay wrestling rings) that have trained Olympic medalists and national champions for over a century. Bordering Haryana lies the Najafgarh Jheel (Lake), historically the largest wetland basin in the Delhi territory, fed by the Sahibi River; today, conservation authorities are restoring its open waters to support seasonal populations of migratory waterfowl, including flamingos, black-necked storks, and sarus cranes.

To the east of Dwarka lies Delhi Cantonment, established in 1914 by the British Indian Army following the relocation of the capital from Calcutta. Spanning thousands of acres of pristine, heavily forested military land, Delhi Cantt serves as the operational headquarters of the Western Command and houses prestigious military institutions, including the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), the Rajputana Rifles Regimental Centre, the Officers Training Academy facilities, and heritage military messes set amidst sprawling colonial lawns.
