Pitampura TV Tower & The Rohini Sub-City Dynamics

Dominating the skyline of North West Delhi is the Pitampura TV Tower, an iconic 235-meter reinforced concrete broadcasting tower completed in 1988. Designed to transmit television and radio signals for Doordarshan and All India Radio across the National Capital Region, the tower features an octagonal observation pod and a towering telecommunications mast, serving as the definitive navigational and visual landmark of the northwest quadrant of Delhi.

At the base of the tower lies Netaji Subhash Place (NSP), one of Delhi's most dynamic corporate and commercial hubs. Characterized by sleek multi-storey glass office complexes, corporate headquarters, commercial banks, and multi-screen cinema theaters, NSP is equally celebrated across Delhi for its lively culinary promenade. The pedestrian plaza features dozens of food outlets, sweetshops, and modern kiosks serving innovative street snacks, stone-grilled sandwiches, thick shakes, momos, and traditional North Indian chaat.

West of Pitampura extends Rohini, one of the largest planned sub-cities in Asia, initiated by the Delhi Development Authority in 1981. Spanning multiple development phases, Rohini was designed to provide integrated residential housing, commercial zones, and educational institutions, including the premier engineering campus of Delhi Technological University (DTU, formerly Delhi College of Engineering). In Sector 10, the sub-city hosts Adventure Island and the adjacent Metro Walk Mall—a 62-acre family entertainment park featuring water rides, roller coasters, a lagoon lake, and an open-air retail village.

Haiderpur Wetland & The Historic Shalimar Bagh

North West Delhi preserves significant ecological wetlands and royal Mughal history. In Shalimar Bagh, surrounded by modern residential colonies, lies the historic Sheesh Mahal and Shalimar Bagh Gardens. Laid out in 1653 CE by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Aizz-un-Nissa Begum (Izz-un-Nisa), this terraced Charbagh (four-fold garden) served as a royal country retreat along the historic Grand Trunk Road route. The garden holds profound historical significance: on July 31, 1658, Prince Aurangzeb crowned himself Emperor of the Mughal Empire here following his victory over his elder brother Dara Shikoh in the battle of Samugarh, marking the dramatic beginning of his nearly half-century reign. Today, the surviving pavilions, arched waterways, and ancient trees are maintained as a heritage park by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Along the outer perimeter of the district, where the Western Yamuna Canal intersects the agricultural borderlands with Haryana, lies the Haiderpur Wetland and canal buffer. This ecological wetland network supports seasonal populations of resident and migratory waterbirds, including bar-headed geese, gadwalls, mallards, and northern lapwings during the winter migration window.

Within Rohini itself, the 62-acre Swarna Jayanti Park (Japanese Park) in Sector 10 provides an urban nature retreat. Developed by the DDA, the park features rolling manicured lawns, Japanese-inspired Zen rock arrangements, children's play zones, and five interconnected boating lakes where families hire paddleboats in the evening cool.

Narela Mandi & The Historic Grand Trunk Corridor

Extending toward the Haryana borderlands in North West Delhi lies Narela, one of the oldest, largest, and most historic agricultural trading hubs in northern India. Situated along the ancient Uttarapatha—the historic trade route that Sher Shah Suri and later the Mughals fortified into the Grand Trunk Road—Narela has operated as a regional grain collection depot for over six centuries, facilitating the exchange of agricultural produce between the Punjab plains and the imperial capital.

The Narela Anaj Mandi (Grain Market) remains one of the largest wholesale grain terminals in Asia, handling millions of quintals of premium basmati rice, wheat, mustard seed, and pulses annually. During the post-monsoon harvest season, the vast auction yards are filled with tractor-trolleys arriving from agricultural districts across Haryana, Punjab, and western Uttar Pradesh, creating an intense commercial spectacle that underpins the food security of the National Capital Region.

In Alipur and Kanjhawala, North West Delhi preserves its traditional rural village culture, characterized by ancient banyan-shaded chaupals (village council squares), historic havelis with carved wooden doorways, and community stepwells (baolis). The Delhi Development Authority has designated Narela as a major sub-city growth corridor, developing integrated industrial clusters, mega logistics parks, and higher educational campuses, including the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Delhi, positioning North West Delhi as a pivotal bridge between traditional agrarian commerce and modern industrial manufacturing.
